Observational Constraints on Pulsar Wind Theories

چکیده

Two-dimensional, relativistic, MHD simulations of pulsar-wind powered nebulae provide strong constraints on the properties of the winds themselves. In particular, they confirm that Poynting flux must be converted into particle energy close to or inside the termination shock front, emphasising the puzzle known as the σ paradox. To distinguish between the different possible resolutions of this paradox, additional observational constraints are required. In this paper, I briefly discuss two recents developments in this respect: the modelling of high timeresolution optical polarimetry of the Crab pulsar, and the detection of the pulsar/Be star binary PSR 1259-63 in TeV energy gamma-rays. Possible TeV Source Candidates Among The Unidentified EGRET Sources

We study the γ-ray emission from the pulsar magnetosphere based on outer gap models, and the TeV radiation from pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) through inverse Compton scattering using a one-zone model. We showed previously that GeV radiation from the magnetosphere of mature pulsars with ages of ∼ 10− 10 years can contribute to the high latitude unidentified EGRET sources. We carry out Monte Carlo s...

X-ray Spectra of Young Pulsars and Their Wind Nebulae: Dependence on Spin-down Energy

An observational model is presented for the spectra of young rotation-powered pulsars and their nebulae based on a study of nine bright Crab-like pulsar systems observed with the Chandra X-ray observatory. A significant correlation is discovered between the X-ray spectra of these pulsars (PSRs) and that of their associated pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), both of which are observed to be a function ...

4 Possible TeV Source Candidates In The Unidentified EGRET Sources

Pulsar Wind Nebulae in the Chandra Era

Pulsar winds shocked in the ambient medium produce spectacular nebulae observable from the radio through γrays. The shape and the spectrum of a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) depend on the angular distribution, magnetization and energy spectrum of the wind streaming from the pulsar magnetosphere, as well as on the pulsar velocity and the properties of the ambient medium. The advent of Chandra, with i...

High Energy Studies of Pulsar Wind Nebulae

The extended nebulae formed as pulsar winds expand into their surroundings provide information about the composition of the winds, the injection history from the host pulsar, and the material into which the nebulae are expanding. Observations from across the electromagnetic spectrum provide constraints on the evolution of the nebulae, the density and composition of the surrounding ejecta, the g...
